KIMO CHUNG

Kimo is a surfer, standup paddler and waterman from Oahu, Hawaii. He is founder of Hawaii Surf Guru, a company providing  surfing and stand up paddling instruction and private tours of Oahu, Hawaii.

Kimo has been surfing since he was 7 years old and surfed throughout his teens in Waikiki and on the North Shore at Alligator Rock.  He took an old Hobie longboard that he saved up to buy after cleaning his neighbor’s yard all summer long, stripped it down, reshaped it into a short board, and saved his allowance for months to glass it. He made his first leash to attach to the surfboard using a clothesline from his mother’s yard and surgical rubber to strap around his ankle.

In 2000, Kimo started his own surf school in Lahaina, Maui which he ran for 8 years. For 6 years, he also participated in Hawaii’s Surf Camps for Autistic Children. Kimo returned to Oahu to care for his mother and to continue to share his love of surfing in his childhood surfing playground where he mastered the new up and coming water sport of stand up paddling.

Kimo’s philosophy is that surfing can change what you value and the way you look at the challenges in your life.  He believes every person gets a different lesson or message about life from their surfing adventure. Whether it is health, well-being, confidence, connecting with your inner child, or the will to move-forward, Kimo believes from surfing you will not only experience the joy of standing up on a wave but also the lessons for becoming a happier and stronger person in your personal life.

Surfing is Kimo’s passion.  It’s his honor to teach the Art of Surfing that is the gift of his Hawaiian heritage.
